Margaret and Corey are a husband and wife video production and photography team taking viewers on a tour of America’s colorful fantasy hotels with their ‘A Pretty Cool Hotel Tour‘ series on Instagram.
Tell us about yourselves.
“We met in college and got married 10 years ago this year. We were raised in the Midwest but moved to the Los Angeles area 6 years ago to build our production business Marginal Creative together. We were traveling a lot for work and started finding more and more theme and fantasy hotels across the country and decided to start documenting them!”
Describe the series.
“A Pretty Cool Hotel Tour started as a side hobby of staying at these hidden gem hotels around the country but it quickly became a more focused project when we realized how amazing these places were. There are so many vintage love motels, adult resorts, fantasy suites, and theme rooms that are quickly disappearing. We’re convinced that if more people knew these places existed that more people would be keeping these businesses afloat. We try to showcase as many as we can by reviewing the location and giving honest feedback on what to expect while enjoying the quirky locations ourselves.”
What were your motivations for starting the hotel tour series?
“The motivation for making this series started as a desire to see these kitschy hotels stay in business, and even make a comeback. Because we were already traveling with our camera gear for work it was a natural side project for us! At first, we were just having fun and sharing photos but so many people wanted to find these places themselves that we decided to share more information along the way. At the end of the day, so many people want a unique experience with a great photo-op and that’s something these hotels provide. It’s more of the norm to share a striking photo on Instagram but not give the details as to where your location is so I think the special thing about this project is we’re giving all the secrets along the way so more people can enjoy these weird and wonderful places for themselves.”
What do you look for in your featured hotels?
“We’re looking for a unique experience! Something that’s surprising or even shocking or just delightful. That could be a heart-shaped tub, a water slide, a sex chair, or fake foliage everywhere creating a rainforest vibe. We love the focus on sensuality in these “adult” hotels that feature lots of mirrors and romantic lighting as well. They set the stage for some unforgettable memories and really remove you from the day-to-day mentality.”
